One common question I get asked all the time when I’m talking about my blog is “how do you find inspiration to write about all this stuff?”
Firstly, there is always a deep meaning behind every one of my published blog posts (there’s over 200 of them now!) and whilst it is not intended to be positive vibes everywhere, it is just how it has turned out, being a naturally positive person gives it direction which comes through naturally in my work. Secondly it helps to be passionate about the subject matter, you never know how you might inspire others through your experiences, this is something I never take for granted.

As the world of work and business continues to evolve, attracting, retaining and developing the right employees has always been an important factor for business success, but why has it become the latest “trend” in the HR world?
“Learning experiences are like journeys. The journey starts where the learning is now, and ends when the learner is successful. The end of the journey isn’t knowing more, it’s doing more”.
I know I don’t normally publish a blog post every time I complete a piece of work on my CIPD Level 7 journey but today will be an exception as I finally pushed the submit button on my dissertation! It is admittedly the biggest and most time consuming challenge for Level 7 students, so I hope by writing this, it can provide some much needed reassurance around tackling the Investigating a Business Issue module.
A lot of people I speak to are really intimidated by this particular module, I am not sure if it is due the the 7000 word count and reflective report or if it is simply the volume of work involved, but if you are umming and ahhing like I was over this, then I promise it really isn’t as scary as you think!
Firstly, remember that this module is meant to be a challenge, after all, nothing worth working for comes easily, so do keep this in mind when approaching this module. I’ve pulled together some learning points that may help you when it comes to approaching this piece of work so I hope you find it useful.

I have just finished reading Michelle Obama’s book for the second time and this particular subject, whilst it certainly isn’t new, is one that so many overlook and it can be a really confidence knock. It was a part of her book that really resonated with me, many times in my career I have experienced not being taken seriously, that led me to think that there is a problem with how I present myself to others.
If you’ve picked up a newspaper or seen the news recently, it seems to be all doom and gloom in the headlines, some even going as far as “naming and shaming” particular employers which has created a workplace minefield. We’ve seen cases of bullying, racism, homophobia and sexual harassment, and whilst none of this is new, we live in a time where people are starting to speak more openly about these really important topics. The question for employers and employees alike – what can, and what should we do about it?
As humans, we always have a choice on how we act and respond to events that go on around us, it is our actions that make a huge impact. When I created HR acts of kindness in 2016, my aim was to create kinder workplaces and inspire others to create their own versions of kindness to spread within their workplaces as well as the wider community.

With so many companies already trying different approaches to recruiting their new team members, it would be easy to think that removing the CV from the process completely wouldn’t be seen as that disruptive – indeed, many of the conversations I’ve had with companies are around the fact that they already feel they are being disruptive because they have changed their approach to no longer rely on the CV – but that’s not quite the same as dropping it completely.
