Many people reading the title of this post will be wondering why is employee financial wellbeing important, and what does it have to do with me as an employer?

Financial worries account for the majority of stress felt by employees in the workplace today, this can be attributed to the rising costs of living combined with the stagnation of salaries. However, the impact that personal finances has on your employee’s health in terms of poor psychological wellbeing, higher stress and anxiety levels, can be felt heavily by the employer such as increased levels of absence and lower levels of productivity.

Is Blue Monday really that bad?

jakub-jacobsky-219899-unsplash

It has been branded the worst day of the entire year (I know, tough crowd, huh?!) but is Blue Monday really that bad?

Blue Monday was actually a gimmick created by a travel company in an attempt to convince people to book a holiday, and it worked! Blue Monday is actually a big day for retailers, and with the early dark nights, the grey cold weather, the passing of the jolly Christmas festivities and the tight finances can all contribute to feeling a bit blue at this time of year.

It is safe to say that we can all pretty much agree that Monday is not the most exciting day of a week, and it is always hard to get back into the swing of things at work after a nice relaxing weekend. But aren’t we being a little bit harsh on the third Monday of January? Can we really assume it to be the most depressing day of the year? Personally I do not think so, but as with everything, it is a matter of perspective, but one thing is for sure, the media channels love to bring it to our attention every year, however, it is almost always in a negative light.

Why Sunday’s are the perfect day for self care

clay-banks-550650-unsplash

Long lie in’s, fresh coffee, roast dinners, long walks, time spent with friends and loved ones, Sunday’s are unknowingly filled with all of those things that make us feel good, making them the perfect day to practice self care without even trying!

Taking time for ourselves is becoming increasingly important, as our lives become busier by the day, the levels of stress increase and therefore we have to make sure we are managing these levels so that is doesn’t have a negative impact upon our mental health.

Self care covers every aspect of our lives and how we feel; from our mental health to our physical health, therefore, if we are not operating on all cylinders, then we are likely to feel sluggish and generally more negative.

From Travel Agent to HR Consultant; my career journey so far

When I meet people that have either read the blog or seen me speak at an event, one of the first questions I get asked is how I managed to get from being a Travel Agent to an HR Consultant.

The reason I was inspired to write this post is because at this time of year, many people think, new year, new career, and I thought this may help some people if they were considering this particular situation.

The shameless selfie above was taken just before Christmas outside of the Maidenhead branch of TUI (formerly Thomson Holidays, and yes I did get some strange looks!) this is where I had my first proper job interview at the age of 18 when it was known as Lunn Poly (that may take a few of you back!). I was just about to finish my A-Levels in business, Travel and Tourism and I didn’t want to wait until my exam results, I wanted to get into work as soon as possible, so the day after my exams finished, I was working and sending people all over the world on their dream holidays.

HR acts of kindness – January musings

aaron-burden-223239-unsplash

January is known for being dull, grey and cold. Generally miserable to most, but as with most things, I always see the new year with a new month as a fresh opportunity.

Winter is the perfect time to reflect upon the past and making new plans for the future, this could be in your career, your personal life or an area of development that you’ve been putting off for a while.

Over Christmas, I had a lot of time to reflect upon what made 2018 so special, and HR acts of kindness was one of those very special things. It has been incredible over the past two years to see people from all over the world brought together through this simple initiative. It has made so many people smile all over the world, so firstly, let me thank each of you who have been a part of it so far, you’re all awesome!
