How to create a successful onboarding experience

“I truly believe that onboarding is an art. Each new employee brings with them a potential to achieve and succeed. To lose the energy of a new hire through poor onboarding is an opportunity lost.”

As part of my CIPD studies, I recently wrote a piece about the importance of the onboarding process and how crucial it is to get it right.

Have you ever started a role full of excitement and potential, only to find a few weeks or months later the spark just wears off? Well research suggests that without adequate support or a comprehensive induction, employees often don’t end up staying with the company past four months if the onboarding process isn’t thoroughly carried out.

For employers, a failed onboarding process can be equally frustrating, time consuming and not to mention expensive!

“Life truly begins after you have put your house in order”

Marie Kondo

Can you believe that it is July already? It only seems like yesterday that we were seeing in the new year with fresh eyes and setting those all important goals for the year. As we are now over halfway through the year, we often have lost sight of those aims and resolutions, and whilst we’ve generally been busy bees, it feels like we’re getting nowhere fast, sound familiar?

In this short post, I’m sharing with you that I am feeling like I’ve lost my focus a little, I’ve made no secret that times have been a little tough lately, but I’m finally starting to see more clearly so I can focus on what is important, one step at a time.

So here are a few things that may help you stop procrastinating and start doing!

Succeeding through failure

As many of you already know, I have recently taken my CIPD Level 7 examinations in January and have recently received my results; I passed one but sadly the one I worked really hard on, I failed.

That F on that piece of paper was devastating, I’ve been in HR for 13 years, worked really hard, know my stuff and usually have a thick skin but that F really hurt!

I am writing this about a month after receiving that F, and I have had a chance to step back and reflect on it and that F really isn’t that bad, in fact, it has taught me a lot of things which can be taken as a positive through my career journey; after all, if life isn’t lived like you’re on a rollercoaster, it’s not living, it’s existing.

From Travel Agent to HR Consultant; my career journey so far

When I meet people that have either read the blog or seen me speak at an event, one of the first questions I get asked is how I managed to get from being a Travel Agent to an HR Consultant.

The reason I was inspired to write this post is because at this time of year, many people think, new year, new career, and I thought this may help some people if they were considering this particular situation.

The shameless selfie above was taken just before Christmas outside of the Maidenhead branch of TUI (formerly Thomson Holidays, and yes I did get some strange looks!) this is where I had my first proper job interview at the age of 18 when it was known as Lunn Poly (that may take a few of you back!). I was just about to finish my A-Levels in business, Travel and Tourism and I didn’t want to wait until my exam results, I wanted to get into work as soon as possible, so the day after my exams finished, I was working and sending people all over the world on their dream holidays.

Christmas Eve greetings!

It’s Christmas Eve! This is one of my favourite days of the year, with all of the cosy traditions, excitement and anticipation that the festivities bring. I especially love how everything just seems to stop, the bustling shops begin to calm and families, friends and loved ones gather together to celebrate.
