It’s time to make recruitment more human

We hear the term “making the workplace more human” so when we are putting this into practice, why do we insist on using the same old recruitment processes?

After Thursday’s thought provoking HR Hour on Twitter, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight the HR world’s thoughts on how we can improve the process and really make it relevant to the changing world of work.

Every manager dreads asking competency based interview questions “Tell me about a time when…” these questions are rigid, artificial and if candidates googled the ideal answers to these standard questions, they’ll be able to get well-structured answers to put them in the best light and the hiring manager will be none the wiser, thinking that they’d found the ideal candidate.

Creating opportunity at a time of career darkness

We often speak of how our experiences impact upon our careers and it’s usually in a positive way despite their good, bad or ugly nature at the time.

Regardless of the circumstances, we tend to reflect upon these experiences and extract what we have learnt from them much later on, but in the spirit of new beginnings, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to start seeing the silver linings much sooner?

January’s Recommended Read: People With Purpose by Kevin Murray

Every month throughout 2018 I will be recommending a business book as a read of the month.

As many of you who are involved in HR Hour every Thursday night, a common thread in this week’s discussions was continuous learning as a priority for this year, so this I thought that this may help inspire people to learn something new.

This month, my recommended read is People With Purpose by Kevin Murray, this book was recommended to me by someone who I professionally admire, and when I read it the first time, I felt motivated and raring to go. It also encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and volunteer to speak at this year’s Midlands Area Partnership Student Conference in March.

If you are lacking direction in your career or leadership style or simply want to enhance your productivity, then this book is perfect to kick start your new year.

 

Back to work blues? Blame the bosses…

After all the festivities, it’s time to head back to the office and it’s no surprise that January is notoriously known for being the most depressing month of the year (yikes, tough crowd you’ve got here January!).

However, despite the dark days, dark nights and miserable weather, January is a month of opportunity and a perfect time for organisations to review their working practices to make improvements for the future.

A new year brings new opportunities #ICSRealStories

Forget resolutions, make 2018 the year to achieve your goals!

The mince pies have been eaten and the parties have wound down. This is the time of year that many people sit down and write a list of resolutions to achieve by this time next year, only to be left disheartened a few weeks later; but not this year.

This year, I have decided to tear up those resolutions and break that negative cycle by doing something meaningful. As a HR professional, continuous development is really important and a priority, so I have set myself a goal to complete my level 7 Diploma in HR Management including the two exams which are set for May and September.
