Upgrading your CIPD membership – what’s it all about?

When I became a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD in April 2021, it was one of the biggest career achievements of my journey so far!

After many years of volunteering and supporting my fellow HR professionals with their own career journeys, I am often asked what the benefits of upgrading are, but also what level of membership is right for them.

Before I get into the details, I must state that having a CIPD qualification is only one part of upgrading your CIPD membership, and before you start, I always recommend that you research the costs and your reasons why you’d like to upgrade, it’s a personal journey, so don’t compare yourself to other people’s levels or journey, I assure you they’re not the same!

What is the CIPD?

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is a globally recognised professional body for HR and people development professionals. Becoming a member of the CIPD demonstrates your commitment to continuous professional development and staying updated with the latest trends and practices in the field.

As you progress your HR career, upgrading your CIPD membership level can bring numerous benefits, including enhanced credibility, expanded networking opportunities, and access to advanced resources. In this article, I will guide you through the process of upgrading your CIPD membership, which could create new career opportunities.

Understanding the CIPD Membership Levels

The CIPD offers various membership levels, each reflecting different stages of professional development and experiences. To get started, you should familiarise yourself with the different membership levels to determine which one aligns with your experience and qualifications. Affiliate Membership

This entry-level membership is suitable for individuals who are not HR professionals, but need access to HR content and information. It’s also a great entry-level access to those starting their HR journey or those who do not yet meet the criteria for higher levels.

Student Membership

This is for those who are studying a CIPD qualification to build their learning, increase their profession based knowledge, and boost their career prospects. Studying a qualification and becoming a CIPD Student Member is the first step on the professional recognition ladder, and demonstrates your dedication to continuous learning and development.

Foundation Membership

This level of membership starts to build your credibility. It shows you’re serious about your development and that you have a strong base of knowledge to build on. Once you’ve successfully completed your CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice you can become a Foundation Member.

When you’re an Foundation Member, you can use the designation Foundation CIPD after your name.

Associate Membership (Assoc CIPD)

Associate membership is for HR professionals with foundational knowledge and experience in the field, if you’re a student and have completed a relevant CIPD qualification, or have practiced as an associate member for over 5 years.

When you’re an Associate Member, you can use the designation Assoc CIPD after your name.

Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD)

This level is for HR professionals who have achieved a CIPD-approved qualification or can demonstrate substantial HR experience.

When you’re a Chartered Member, you can use the designation Chartered MCIPD after your name.

Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD)

Chartered Fellow is the highest membership level, requiring significant HR leadership experience and strategic influence.

When you’re a Chartered Fellow Member, you can use the designation Chartered FCIPD after your name.

Before you upgrade, you need to assess your eligibility

Before upgrading your CIPD membership, it’s important to assess your eligibility for the next level. Review the criteria outlined by the CIPD in it’s Profession Map Tool, or on the Membership Pages for each membership level, including educational qualifications, HR experience, and demonstration of professional competence.

The Profession Map really helped me to prepare me to upgrade to my Chartered Fellow level of membership after I completed my Masters Degree in HR Management Identify any gaps in your credentials or experience that may need to be addressed before progressing to the next level.

Bridging the gap in your knowledge and skills

If you find gaps in your qualifications or experience that prevent you from advancing to the next membership level, consider the following steps to bridge those gaps:

Continuous Learning: Engage in relevant professional development activities such as attending conferences, workshops, webinars, and courses to enhance your knowledge and skills.

Further Education: Pursue CIPD-approved qualifications at the appropriate level to deepen your understanding of HR principles and practices. These could include certificates, diplomas, or even a Master’s degree in HR or a related field.

Professional Experience: Seek opportunities within your current role or through volunteering to gain experience in areas where you feel lacking.

Mentorship: Connect with experienced HR professionals who can guide you in acquiring the necessary competencies and navigating your HR career.

Preparing Your Upgrade Application

Once you meet the eligibility criteria for the desired membership level, you can start preparing your upgrade application. The CIPD website provides comprehensive guidance on the documentation required, but generally, you will need to include the following:

  • Membership Application Form: Fill out the application form accurately, providing relevant details about your qualifications, experience, and professional achievements.
  • Supporting Documents: Submit copies of your educational certificates, CIPD-approved qualifications, and evidence of professional development activities.
  • References: Provide references from professionals who can attest to your HR expertise and competence, such as supervisors, colleagues, or clients.

Submission and Evaluation

Submit your upgrade application to the CIPD through their designated portal or via mail. The CIPD will review your application, assessing your eligibility against the membership criteria. The evaluation process may take some time, so be patient.

While awaiting the outcome of your upgrade application, continue investing in your professional development.
