Conflict within small businesses can disrupt operations and create a sense of unease among the entire team. When tensions rise between employees, it is crucial to address the situation promptly and effectively. In a recent experience, I had the opportunity to assist a client who was grappling with a deteriorating relationship between an employee and themselves.
This particular situation was fraught with stress and disagreement, with both parties unable to find common ground.
I wrote this article to highlight the increasing complexities of the HR profession and the challenges faced by small business owners in managing conflicts with employees. It also highlights the value of having appropriate HR support to navigate such situations.
The Escalation of Conflict
In this particular case, my client was dealing with a highly stressful scenario. As a business owner that was new to people management, they found themselves confronted with a disgruntled employee and a relationship that had irreparably soured. It became evident that both parties had differing expectations and perspectives, making resolution seemingly impossible. Such conflicts often become personal and emotional, causing even the most well-intentioned managers to struggle to maintain composure. Recognising the need for intervention, my client sought external assistance to prevent the issue from spiraling out of control.
The Role of HR
One of the primary reasons businesses seek HR support in situations like these is because HR professionals can offer an impartial perspective. By being removed from the day-to-day dynamics and personal investments, they can objectively assess the situation and devise an appropriate course of action. In this case, my client turned to me to help resolve the conflict. By taking on this role, I alleviate the stress from the business owner’s shoulders, as they were too close to the situation to effectively handle it themselves.
It is at this critical point that an HR headache can potentially escalate into a much larger problem.
The Challenge of Resolving People Problems
Solving conflicts between individuals is a complex and challenging task. It requires a careful balance of empathy, understanding, and impartiality. As an HR professional, I wanted to identify an suitable resolution that would suit both employer and employee. This process is rarely easy, and I am reliant upon my mediation, employment law and problem solving skills as it demands open communication, active listening, and creative problem-solving. Nevertheless, it is a crucial aspect of effective people management within businesses.
The Value Add of HR
When facing difficult situations like the one my client encountered, having the right support can make all the difference. Small business owners often wear multiple hats, juggling various responsibilities all at the same time. Workplace conflicts can be overwhelming and time-consuming, which diverts their attention from other priorities and running their business.
By reaching out to an HR professional, they gain a trusted partner who can guide them through the complexities of conflict resolution and ensure that the best interests of the business are upheld.
Appreciation and Gratitude
In the case I described, I was able to assist the business owner in resolving the conflict, to me I am just doing my job, but to the client it meant so much more to resolve the issue.
It was undoubtedly a challenging journey for them, but by following the appropriate procedures, we arrived at a resolution that benefited the business and everyone involved. This experience serves as a reminder that the role of HR extends far beyond the stereotype of “tea and biscuits.” It involves tackling complex interpersonal issues head-on, promoting harmony within the workplace, and safeguarding the overall success of the business.
I would like to express my gratitude to my client for their incredibly kind gesture of appreciation. The beautiful flowers and kind words are a testament to the impact effective HR support can have on resolving conflicts and fostering a positive work environment. By acknowledging the role of HR professionals and seeking their assistance when needed, small business owners can overcome challenging situations, paving the way for growth and positive workplace cultures. Never forget that the smallest of actions can create a much greater impact.
